Avellino FC History
Avellino Futbol Club was formed in 1987 on the foundation of three boy's teams. The Club was funded by a generous donation from a company in Kansas City that had corporate colors of silver and maroon. To this day, Avellino's distinctive maroon uniforms pay tribute to the Club's heritage. Players on the last of the original teams graduated from high school in 1996.
In 1991 the club had one girl's team and four boys' teams, each with a different coach and style of play. These teams competed well and had some successes. However, the Board felt that hiring a professional coach, to recruit and train other coaches, would lead to better player development and consistent competition.
By the end of '92 summer tryouts, the Club had grown to ten teams, five girl's and five boy's. During most seasons today, the Club has at least one team in each age group and multiple teams in some. Avellino teams have won uncountable tournaments, and can boast of one boy's and four girl's Kansas State Championships. Many Avellino players have continued to play for their college teams, several on scholarship.
In June of 2000, Avellino FC introduced their first Summer Soccer Skills Camp with over 200 kids in attendance. These summer soccer skills camps give players age 6-12 a chance to improve their skills and prepare for the upcoming season. In the Fall of 2000, Avellino FC had grown to 18 teams.
Avellino FC in Africa
AFC players collected and donated soccer uniforms and equipment for children/adults in Africa. The donations also helped build a church. See Schaun's story below.
Schaun tells a quick story of how AFC got to Africa and helped build a church:
We arrived at a squatter camp to try and locate the adult team we wanted to support. The reason we needed to help them is that we truly needed their protection. The squatter camps can get fairly hostile, especially since we were building a church building right in the heart of this area. While we were chatting to the team members in a shack, somebody threw a brick through the car window. In others words, stay away. The soccer guys were irate because we were their buddies, they apologized that this happened and ensured our safety. We showed up three days later with the uniforms and building materials. Three days later a church was up and we had no incidents. So cool.
We distributed uniforms at three schools as well. The excitement is almost uncontainable. These kids truly love the uniforms. Home run all the way.
Thanks again for helping with this. I believe we could do this on every trip and will never run out of communities that would feel God's love through a simple gesture of equipping them to partake in their sport that knows no poverty, race, or disease. Simple gesture with profound impact.
